The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Arts Council England and Voluntary Arts England invite you to take part in a major national conference on local arts participation and voluntary and amateur groups. Participation in the arts makes a powerful contribution to local communities. This year marks the introduction of National Indicator 11 on engagement in the arts and for the first time levels of arts engagement will be measured at local authority level across England. The conference will launch landmark new research, commissioned by DCMS and the Arts Council, looking in detail for the first time at the size, make-up and impact of the voluntary arts sector and its potential for growth. It will also look at the role local voluntary and amateur arts groups can play in building local arts engagement and how to create effective partnerships for delivery.
Keynote speakers include:
Alan Davey Chief Executive, Arts Council England
Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MP Minister for Culture
David Lammy MP Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills, Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills
Feargal Sharkey Chief Executive, British Music Rights
Robin Simpson Chief Executive, Voluntary Arts Network
Breakout sessions will look at how local arts groups can take part in the Cultural Olympiad, how to engage new participants in the arts and new data on patterns of local participation. The event will be of key interest to policy formers, decision makers and senior personnel from local authorities, voluntary, community and charitable organisations.
There will also be an evening reception at the Barbican, hosted by the Carnegie (UK) Trust, on the evening of 1 July. This event will include the launch of the Voluntary Arts England publication Edutainment and all conference delegates are invited to attend.
Attendance at the conference and evening reception is free, but spaces are limited.
Reserve your place using our online booking form by clicking here.

2nd July 2008
University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston
Free of charge
Manufacturers are competing in a global marketplace, where labour costs are often significantly lower and companies are investing heavily in the latest technology. Many North West companies have found that long-standing customer relationships only count for so much, and when the cost differential gets big enough, business moves overseas.
So how can you win? How can you buck the trend?
This is an exciting opportunity to hear and meet leading manufacturers and suppliers, to gain an insight into their manufacturing strategies, and where and how that will impact on their supply chains.
The event includes > Keynote speakers from BAE Systems, Springfields Fuels, Renishaw and Festo > Presentation on the opportunities offered by advanced technologies as well as the ‘key drivers’ and current and future issues facing the sector > Exhibitions of latest manufacturing technologies > Networking opportunities with speakers and other manufacturing companies > Opportunities to meet Senior Academic staff from UCLan and see facilities such as our Visualisation Laboratory
Who should attend? This event is aimed at decision makers and senior managers in small to medium sized manufacturing companies, so if you are an Owner/Manager, Manufacturing Director or Manager, Senior Design or Production Engineer, this event is for you.

The Substance Annual Conference 2008
15th and 16th July 2008
The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester
After the Event will focus on events of every hue - from the global to the local; from the mega to the mini; from cultural to sports. It will ask: ‘How do we make them ‘open’? How do we make them work for us? What do we mean by legacy?’
2008 is the year of the Beijing Olympics, Euro 2008 and Liverpool’s City of Culture. Our conference takes place during Manchester’s World Sport 08. It’s the year the Olympiad hands over to London ahead of 2012. Each will claim to deliver an event that everyone can join in. Each will claim a ‘legacy’.
But there are also a myriad of local, smaller events. Cultural community celebrations. Sports festivals. Youth activities. Away from the cameras, how do we organise these to ensure access, benefits and impacts?
There is an imperative that these events all deliver. Great occasions. Openness. Participation. Accessibility. Community development. Legacy.
After the Event brings together policy makers, event organisers, programme managers, project deliverers. Telling you how it is and how it’s been. After the Event will introduce the most recent research to inform, stimulate debate and provoke change. Giving you information on what’s happened and how you can deliver. After the Event will showcase good practice; demonstrate techniques; create new connections. It will help make things happen. After the Event will be Domestic, European, Global. After the Event is the second Substance Annual Conference following 2007’s acclaimed ‘Beyond Engagement’ (see www.beyondengagement.org.uk).
